Simplify, simplify and simplify again...

Business process improvement, simply put, involves gaining competitive advantage by doing things more effectively. Commonly, this means it has one or more important goals: increasing the effectiveness of products or services, increasing operating efficiency or making the organisation  “easier to engage and work  with”.  Achieving these goals requires extending process thinking to include your customers and suppliers.

There is no silver bullet

For us, business process improvement is not a one-size-fits-all management trend. Rather, it’s about clearly defining the scope of the business process change needed to meet the your organisations needs. The scope of change can range from automating a manual process to using business intelligence to enable growth. Each type requires different skills, governance and strength of will.  There’s many “flavours” of business process improvement which includes, amongst others Lean, Six Sigma, Value Chain Analysis, and TQM.  However choosing the most appropriate approach is, we believe, dependent upon understanding and appreciating the type of culture that your organisation has, rather than attempting to “shoehorn” the wrong approach into the wrong area.
